Lubriphonic - Whiskey & Chicken Wings

Lubriphonic (@lubriphonic) is the band that opened for Robert Randolph & The Family Band (@rrtfb) last night at the Bijou Theatre (@bijoutheatre).  They were a great funky band from Chicago.  If you like what you hear, head over to the website and download some free tunes.

A song I have always related to, more so lately than ever.

Knee Deep - Zac Brown Band

Digging most everything I'm hearing from the Zac Brown Band.

On another note, I'm trying something different with regards to embedding videos.  Seems more and more music videos are not allowing embedding of videos so I'm going to try using sources like CMT.com & vh1.com for my video sources.  If anyone has other suggestions, I'm open to them.

Olivia Newton John 1973 Let Me Be There

I always liked the bass backup singer in this song. It's a little toned down in this live version but it's there if you listen closely.

Set Adrift On Memory Bliss - PM Dawn (HQ Audio)

Remember when you first heard PM Dawn's Set Adrift on Memory Bliss and thinking that sounds like Spandau Ballet's True. I know I do. It was when sampling was still "new."

People are people so why should it be that as neighbors you can get under my skin.

Happy Birthday Merle Haggard!

Anyone who has known me for any length of time knows that I'm a big Merle Haggard fan and today just happens to be his birthday. Finding just one song to post was too hard to do, so I've created a playlist. However, due to embedding restriction only 6 of the 14 songs I added to my playlist are showing up.  The complete playlist can be viewed here: Ken's Merle Haggard playlist.

Happy Birthday, Merle!

People I Know: Down From Up - It's Our Time Now

If you have been around the Knoxville live music scene very long chances are you have seen Matt Brewster at one time or another. He's played as part of Matt & Erik (Erik Baker), Brewster's Millions, and more currently Down From Up.

My connection to Matt started as a friend of friend and later my 7 yr old's infatuation with the guy with a fauxhawk in the church band.

People I Know: Pistol Creek Catch of the Day - Thunderoad & All The Single Ladies

Since the first time I heard my friend, Scott, play guitar, I have been impressed with his ability to play any instrument he sets his mind to play. When we first met he was big into guitar with his main influence being Stevie Ray Vaughan. I watched his style change as he become more influenced by Brian Setzer. As time went on he decided to pick up the upright bass became influenced by Joe Fick of The Dempsey's.

While the sound quality isn't that great in this video of Pistol Creek Catch of the Day, the version of Single Ladies at 4:30 is pretty awesome.

People I Know: Tori Mason - Growing Pains

I met Tori a couple of years ago at one of the Tennessee Association of Museums conferences. Over the course of the past year, I realized that Tori was a singer/songwriter. After listening to Tori's music and reading her profile, I realized that many of her influences are among my favorites. You can find more of Tori's music on her Facebook page, Tori Mason Music.

People I Know: Greek Life Aquarium - Monotony

Recently at the Tennessee Association of Museums annual conference, I ran into some folks that have some musical talent. It made me think of other friends that I know who are playing gigs on a pretty basis and that I share a lot of popular stuff but not any of people I truly know. So I thought I'd take the opportunity to do so.

With that being said Greek Life Aquarium doesn't exist anymore. One of the band members has moved on to form Tuscon Simpson, which I will share later. I wanted to start with this song because I love the 80s sound of it.

Reunited-Peaches and Herb

In the category of "Things Kids Get With Their Fat-filled Meal," my 7 yr old received a karaoke CD and he and the 2 yr old sing this song very loudly in the car now.  Not sure where you draw the line on cuteness and inappropriateness but I think we may have crossed it.

Science Song Week: Timbuk 3 - The Future's So Bright

I studied nuclear science and work at a museum...not really, I studied biology.

Science Song Week: Oingo Boingo - Weird Science

Before he was writing scores for Tim Burton movies, Danny Elfman made a living making New Wave music.

Science Song Week: Big Audio Dynamite - E=MC2

Seems only appropriate to play E=MC2 on Albert Einstein's birthday and to kick off Science Song Week.  Happy Birthday, Al!

Spandau Ballet - Gold

The band was so much more than just a True song to be sampled by P.M. Dawn.

To Sir With Love sung by Lulu (1967) with opening movie credits

If ever there was a movie to inspire you to become a teacher, this one would do it. I've always had a soft spot for movies or tv shows that revolve around teachers and school. Hell, I even liked The Principal.

The System - Don't Disturb This Groove

How could you?  I remember when this song came out, the year I graduated, and thought it was the funkiest thing on the radio.

As She's Walking Away - Zac Brown Band

I'm really surprised this song isn't getting some pop radio airplay.  It's no more country than that Lady Antebellum song and more enjoyable, in my opinion.

You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma - David Frizzell & Shelly West

Not sure why this song gets stuck in my head from time to time but it does.

A little trivia:
  • David is the brother of country music legend Lefty Frizzell
  • Shelly is the daughter of country music legend Dottie West, who is from the McMinnville, TN area.

I couldn't pull it off.

Not sure if any of you know local musician, Matt Brewster of Down From Up or Brewster's Millions, but he's sportin' one helluva mohawk these days.  It makes me think of the outlandish hair style of Mike Score of A Flock of Seagulls.

(Did you see the camera reflected in the mirror?  Not only was this an "early" music video, it was also a low-budget music video.)

...just don't get caught by a traffic camera

Was listening to 105.3 today when Jonny Lang's Red Light came on.  It had been a while since I've heard it but I remembered that I liked the song when it first came out in 2003.  A lot has changed since then and of course with my cynicism, the first thing I thought of was, "If you ran a red light today, you'd get caught on camera and mailed a ticket."

Eat like you were dyin'

Not sure what drives me sometimes but I often make up words to songs and sing them around the house. Some version of what you read below is what I was singing this morning.

I went pie buyin', I went rocky road ice cream tryin'
I chewed 2.7 seconds on meat that was too tough to chew
And my pizza was deeper, And my tea was sweeter
and I gave up grillin' and started fryin'
An' he said,  Some day I hope you get the chance,
To eat like you were dyin'.
